Nicaragua image gallery contains photos from Las Penitas beach, Ometepe island, towns of Leon, Granada, and their surroundings.
Las Penitas is a very quiet beach town.
…It is so quiet you can dry your laundry in the middle of the street.
It was probably very challenging to paint this wall while standing in the thorny bushes full ofsmall lizards.
A pound just outside of Granada
...same location, just turned my head 30 degrees left
The neighboring country, Costa Rica, is more economically developed, much more touristy, and therefore more expensive! In Costa Rica, I paid almost three times as much for a simple meal at the street market as I did in Nicaragua!

Nicaragua is a small country, but pretty diverse. It’s got lakes, mountains, volcanoes, jungles, surfing beaches in the Pacific, and snorkeling beaches on the Caribbean side.
Nicaragua has a somewhat bad reputation for crime and violence. I felt pretty safe, though. If people feel comfortable traveling to Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Ecuador, or Peru, there is absolutely no reason for them to blacklist Nicaragua. It seems like the country has been targeting budget tourism. As a result, there are $5 hostels everywhere! Sharing a border with the incredibly popular Costa Rica should be beneficial for the future of tourism in Nicaragua.

And now… the volcanoes!
Volcano Concepcion, Ometepe island – A view from the terrace of my $5 / night accommodation
Nicaragua is completely packed with volcanoes, as you can see from these photos. Many of them are still active. Wikipedia has a list of them with the map.
