TDI: 2 What's this?

This image gallery contains photos from La Paz, the capital of Bolivia; El Alto; Tupiza; Sorata; Yungas (a.k.a. Death Road); Isla del Sol; and Copacabana at Lake Titicaca.

La Paz, the tallest capital in the world – altitude 3,700 m

If you’re interested in my stories from traveling in South America, I recommend checking out the Peru post.

street vendors in la paz, bolivia
La Paz is interesting to explore and good for shopping as well

La Paz is located in a canyon, which makes it a perfect trekking city

A view on La Paz from El Alto – a neighboring city on top of the canyon, with the altitude of 4,150 m (meters, not feet… I know it’s crazy high)
camping at isla del sol, lake titicaca, bolivia
66Camping at Isla del Sol, the island in Lake Titicaca – this is not a camping site, and the ground is not as flat as it looks in this photo
new skyscrapers in la paz
a view on la paz from forest
We have been hiking this side of the canyon for days, and we’ve never seen anybody… no tourists, no locals either!

Keep scrolling… There are more fun photos

la paz view with cemetery and snowy mountain
At the very bottom of this photo is the city cemetery, a snowy mountain at the top, and plenty of good street food anywhere in between!

Because I got stuck in La Paz for too long (no wonder, it’s the best city in the world!), I didn’t have enough time to see Bolivia’s number one attraction: Salar de Uyuni. Here is a cool YouTube video from the world’s largest salt flat.

Tupiza is surrounded by unusual rock formations

yungas road cutting through the green mountain, bolivia
Yungas Road, also known as the Death Road, has a reputation for being the most dangerous road in the world because of the number of annual deaths among commuters. We did a regular tourist activity – biking down the Yungas. Surprisingly, it wasn’t as scary as anticipated. We thought the road was probably deadly only during the rainy season.

If you like street art, I would recommend checking out my photos from Rio de Janeiro

red gondola flying above la paz
In La Paz, people use gondolas for public transportation. When I was there, in 2015, they had 4 of them. I was told now they have 9. The craziest thing about La Paz is that nobody knows about this incredible city!

a water board used as ferry at copacabana, titicaca, bolivia
Copacabana, Titicaca – This floating board is some sort of an alternative to a ferry boat
