TDI: 3 What's this?

This gallery features Sri Lankan photos from Hikkaduwa, Mirissa Beach, Adam’s Peak, and a little bit of Colombo, the capital.

Hikkaduwa has very busy beaches and a very quiet river

old portugese building, hikkaduwa, sri lanka
Back in the 17th century, Sri Lanka was a Portuguese colony. This building is evidence of Portuguese architecture. Eventually, the Brits took over and named the colony Ceylon (you might have heard of it before). After the colony gained independence in 1948, it kept the name Ceylon. Finally, they changed it to Sri Lanka in 1972.

On the very southern tip of the island, this traditional style of fishing is still very common
beach, boulders, palms, mirissa, sri lanka
Secret Beach, Mirissa – The spot is great for diving and snorkeling. I had an interesting freediving session over here. At one point, I got completely surrounded by thousands (or maybe millions) of tiny, tiny fish. There were so many of them that I couldn’t see through them. Therefore, I couldn’t see the bottom anymore. The cool thing about it was that once I started swimming towards the shore, the school of these tiny fish was following me all the way back.

Like the Sri Lanka Photos? I would recommend checking out my Sao Tome post.

Walking up Adam’s Peak stairs. Trekking up the mountain is extremely popular with both tourists and locals. Near the summit is a Buddhist place of worship.

Colombo has some cool Buddhist temples. Also, Hinduism has a huge impact

We never really made it to the top because of the heavy rain. In this short YouTube video, you can see some nice aerial footage of Adam’s Peak.
